Many of us know that Gonorrhea is one of the most commonly placed STDs in the US, however, according to reports, the disease is getting harder and harder to treat, and unsafe oral relations are what seem to be making the STI particularly harmful to others.
That is according to a warning that was issued just this past Friday by experts of the World Health Organization, whose research on the disease shows that patients in 77 different countries with gonorrhea have been drug-resistant, which makes the disease harder, if not impossible, to treat.
“The bacteria that cause gonorrhea are particularly smart,” WHO medical officer Teodora Wi said in a news release. “Every time we use a new class of antibiotics to treat the infection, the bacteria evolve to resist them.”
A whopping 78 million individuals with this disease have gained it by use of unprotected vaginal, oral or anal relations. This STD, unfortunately, affects women on a disproportionate level.
This particular disease has the ability to affect the throat, genitals and rectum area, however, according to Wi, scientists are particularly concerned with matters of the oral area. They told BBC that introducing gonorrhea bacteria into the oral space can lead to what they call “super-gonorrhea,” which is a drug-resistant strain that can, often times, be untreatable.
This seems to happen because antibiotics taken to treat the infection in the throat have the ability to mix in with super-gonorrhea of the throat and create resistance, according to Wi.
This sudden rise in resistance seems to be largely due to the decreased use of contraceptive during intercourse, increased urbanization, as well as travel, poor infection detection rates and even failed treatments, according to the organization.
